- Explain that we can use parts of a word (prefixes, suffixes and root words) to figure out its meaning.
- Define prefix, suffix and root word on blank Smartboard page.
- Show Bazillion’s video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2Z4p0au1yk.) to further define. Encourage dancing and singing along for a kinesthetic aspect and "brain break."
- At the conclusion, ask students to return to their listening position. (Pencils down, bodies are still, mouths are closed and eyes are on me.)
- Go through the Smartboard presentation on Greek and Latin Word Roots for 2nd Grade. Each slide contains a prefix, suffix or root word and its meaning.
- On each slide:
- Question whether it is a prefix or suffix and why.
- Pick students to read each prefix/suffix/root words, its meaning and the listed examples.
- Tell students to come up with more words with that prefix, suffix or root word and discuss it with their Turn and Talk partner. (10 seconds each to encourage quick, meaningful conversation with a peer.)
- Complete Prefix/Suffix/Root Words Chart as a whole group using the document camera and Smart Board.
- Last, students will be asked to write three sentences in their journals using any of the words written on their Prefix/Suffix/Root Words Chart. This will be collected as formative assessment.
